Reading and Writing
Our classrooms use a balanced literacy approach for literacy instruction, where students are given integrated and authentic reading and writing experiences. Using the Houghton Mifflin Journey's program, students participate in guided and shared reading, read alouds, and phonemic awareness activities. In writer's workshop, students utilize Kidwriting during modeled, shared and independent writing.
Mathematics
We currently use the Go Math! program. Our math curriculum utilizes technology and and provides learning opportunities that encourage critical thinking skills. Through the use of manipulatives, students are provided with a hands-on approach to learning foundational concepts that meet Common Core standards.
Social Skills
Our team uses the Responsive Classroom throughout the year to build a positive learning community. In our morning meeting activities, we develop positive interactions and build a family-like environment; we address conflict-resolution strategies throughout the day during classroom meetings. The first few weeks of school, we also incorporate the Second Step Violence Prevention Curriculum. The curriculum teaches students to identify emotions, and develop problem-solving strategies in familiar situations through the use of pictures, songs and puppets.
